A landmark clinical trial suggests that daily vitamin D supplements can significantly slow the cellular aging process.

The study, a sub-analysis of the large VITAL trial, followed over 1,000 adults for four years. Researchers found that participants who took 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily experienced noticeably less shortening of their telomeres—the protective caps on chromosomes that erode with age—compared to those on a placebo.

This preservation of telomere length equates to slowing cellular aging by approximately three years. Telomere length is a key biomarker of aging and is linked to the risk of age-related diseases like cancer. While omega-3 supplements showed no similar effect, these findings position vitamin D as a simple, accessible intervention that may directly impact a fundamental mechanism of aging. Researchers note that further studies are needed to confirm the long-term health benefits.
